As a new student taking your first Jiu Jitsu class at KAIZEN, we want you to have all the information you need to be prepared for a great class. We have great classes led by our black belt instructors under Professor Bruno Jacaré. Depending on your prior experience with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, you will have access to specific classes.

Please review this important information about your first Jiu Jitsu class and if you have additional questions, please let us know and we’d be happy to help you.

All New Students to BJJ

If you have never practiced BJJ then it is important to become familiar with the sport before participating in classes that are beyond your understanding and capabilities. Due to the importance of basic fundamentals of BJJ, KAIZEN–along with Professor Bruno–have placed an emphasis on properly training all new students. A program has been put into place to allow for the best opportunity to progress and improve.

Two Free Intro Classes

All new adult BJJ students receive two free intro classes. These classes are scheduled and may have up to 5 other new students in them. The intro classes focus on mat etiquette, Jiu Jitsu traditions, basic moves, and the KAIZEN code.

The Next Steps

Once the intro classes are completed new students are invited to attend all Fundamental BJJ classes, scheduled daily Monday - Friday. A few other class opportunities are also available to new students. Upon completion of approximately thirty classes and the approval of Professor Bruno, new students can begin taking all offered Adult BJJ classes.

When You Arrive At KAIZEN For Your First Jiu Jitsu Class
When you enter KAIZEN at our location at 130 Washington Street in Norwell, MA 02061, you’ll be welcomed by the receptionist at the front door. You’ll see lots of students and family members milling around and you can check in at the front desk. Once you check in, you’ll be given a Gi to borrow for your class and shown The Mat room where all our Jiu Jitsu classes are held.

What to Wear to a Jiu Jitsu Class at KAIZEN

For your first class, we will lend you a Gi and show you how to wear it. Simply come wearing comfortable workout clothing and the Gi can go over it. Bring along a pair of sandals or slip-on shoes. You’ll be barefoot on the Mat, but we do not allow students to walk barefoot throughout the mat room. For students with long hair, we recommend putting it back in a ponytail.

The Structure of a Jiu Jitsu Class at KAIZEN

Our intro classes are 30 minutes long, while our regular BJJ classes are 60 minutes long. The format of most of our Jiu Jitsu classes at KAIZEN include:

  • Individual warm-up with running and individual movement drills

  • Basic partner drills

  • Technique instruction

  • Technique practice with a partner

  • Question and answer time

  • Sparring for our experienced students

With fun included throughout the class!

The Atmosphere at KAIZEN For Jiu Jitsu Classes

KAIZEN is a place of camaraderie and excellence with an atmosphere of respect, professionalism, and humility. Students must display good etiquette on and off the mat and must follow the following rules as established by Professor Bruno Jacaré:

    2. Bow as a sign of respect when you get on and off the mat.

    3. Shoes are never to be worn on the mat.

    4. Once on the mat, shake everyone’s hand in descending belt rank.

    20. Have a good training session!

The KAIZEN CODE

Our KAIZEN Code defines our organization, guides our behavior, underpins operational activity, and shapes the strategies we will pursue in the face of various challenges and opportunities. These values form the core of our culture and the roadmap for our character development lessons that are woven throughout our children and adult programming.

The KAIZEN CODE is respect, discipline, courage, humility, gratitude, and most importantly love. We like to always make sure to remind our students when on The Mat to stay humble, especially after getting a submission. Our goal is to reinforce positive qualities in our adult and young students—to keep everyone focused on doing their best, persevering, and working to become 1% better every day.

Why We Apply the KAIZEN CODE

Professor Bruno Jacarè is well known throughout the South Shore for his amazing ability to work with children while instilling important lessons and character development habits such as practicing humility, respect, and kindness. While on The Mat, Professor Jacarè makes sure to provide the highest standard of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to ensure adults and children a safe, clean, and fun environment for everyone.

We look forward to your first class. If you have any questions, please reach out to us and we’d be happy to help you!
