Check out the Top 6 Benefits to Kids for Participating in BJJ at KAIZEN
Improve Self-Esteem & Build Confidence - Kids want to feel confident in themselves and parents want to provide them with true experiences that allow them to build their internal self-confidence. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gives opportunities for kids to learn from failures, whether that is in submitting, losing, or tapping. Kids are taught to learn from failure in order to succeed. Self-esteem and confidence are built up by resilience and persistence. Students truly improve when they remain persistent in their training and learn to succeed from failure.
Encourage Discipline & Respect - Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is deeply rooted in ritual and tradition, something our students learn about and practice from their very first day at a BJJ class at KAIZEN. Students in our kids and youth programs are encouraged through KAIZEN’s Mat Etiquette to remain disciplined and show respect during BJJ classes by bowing before going on or off the mat as a sign of respect, shaking everyone’s hands in descending belt rank, maintaining a clean, matching and properly tied Gi on the Mat at all times, as well as being respectful and kind to everyone at all times. Skills like these–and more–practiced on The Mat at KAIZEN are transferable for kids to take beyond their BJJ classes.
Discipline is an important value in the sport of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. In regards to BJJ, discipline is centered around controlling one’s emotions and reactions to establish equilibrium. During times of uncertainty, discipline can help a student return to their properly trained techniques and maneuvers, or it may even give them the correct push to keep going when they feel discouraged. When a child remains disciplined in their BJJ practice, they are able to obtain goals they have set, overcome failures, and develop confidence in themselves.
Foster Friendship & Community - At KAIZEN we are all about creating, maintaining, and elevating friendships and community. Through our BJJ classes, kids foster new friendships and grow into a community as they encounter new faces and similar experiences shared among other students. For most of their class time, students in our BJJ classes are working as partners as they learn new techniques and practice drills. We encourage our students to support one another as they all grow in their training together!
Strengthen Physical Activity & Motor Skill Development - Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a space for kids to actively learn the value of a healthy lifestyle, while exercising the mind as they perform a sequence of moves, techniques, and drills. BJJ classes create time for kids to get their bodies moving and refine their motor skill development as they focus, and perfect maneuvers learned during class. Students committed to their training will see improved body awareness as they concentrate on executing sequences smoothly with guidance from their instructors.
Learn Basic Self-Defense & Sport Jiu Jitsu - Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a great class for kids to begin learning basic self-defense tactics. Encouraging students to use the maneuvers and techniques learned from BJJ classes in a safe and respectful way when not in need of defending oneself is extremely important, but most parents also want to know that their child can stand up for themselves in any situation. Kids can face scenarios where they need the assistance of self-defense in various cases, including that of bullying. The National Center for Educational Statistics reported in 2019 that one out of every five students in schools reported being bullied, with 5% of those students having been shoved, pushed, tripped, or spit on. While kids should not have to face bullying in any setting, it is important that a child may know how to stand up for themselves with basic self-defense tactics that can be learned through BJJ classes.
Practice Humility, Kindness, and Love - Kids learn to practice humility, kindness, and love during their training in KAIZEN’s BJJ classes, qualities that many parents of children at KAIZEN see both on and off the mat, in and outside of the classroom. To practice humility is to learn to be free from pride or arrogance–to remain humble–and is a highly regarded quality in the practice of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Students are encouraged to never let their ego hurt them, it is better to submit and learn from the failure so that one can remain humble in their continued training.
“Professor Bruno has been an outstanding teacher and friend to my children. It is heartwarming to know that my kids and all of their friends are not only learning great Jiu Jitsu but more importantly how to be amazing people. Seeing all of the members coming together to create such a welcoming environment is refreshing. Especially in today’s world, to have a family-friendly place to spend time together and improve ourselves, it’s priceless!”
