Instructor Feature: Herica Tiburcio

Meet Herica, a dedicated mom of two, a first degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and a passionate advocate for the martial art that has touched her life in profound ways. Her journey with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) and her deep connection to her gym, Kaizen, are a testament to the transformative power of discipline, self-defense, and the sense of family that this martial art can provide.

Herica’s Jiu Jitsu Journey

Herica's story with BJJ started at a young age when she first took an interest in the art. However, it wasn't until a year later that she decided to give it a try. From that moment on, she fell head over heels in love with it. What is it about this martial art that captured her heart? It's the simplicity, accessibility, and the valuable life lessons it imparts.

Jiu jJitsu, to Herica, is not just about combat; it's a path to self-defense, discipline, and respect for one another. It teaches humility, perseverance, and the importance of constant improvement, which aligns perfectly with the concept of "Kaizen," a Japanese philosophy of continuous improvement.

Herica’s professional fighting career began in 2013. By 2014 she was competing against the top women fighters. In December of 2014, Herica became the youngest champion in Invicta FC history. At the age of 21 she defeated the reining champion with the guillitine choke taking the Invicta FC Atomweight Champion title. Her belt hangs among the medals and trophys that decorate the Helio Gracie Mat Room at Kaizen. Even though Herica is a force to fight against her love for people, self improvemnt, and family are her most dominating traits!

Family & KAIZEN

Herica's journey took an even more exciting turn when she married Bruno, who shares her passion for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Together, they decided to move to the United States and began training together. The idea of opening their own gym had always been a dream. Little did they know that fate had something extraordinary in store for them. They met John and the Rich family, who shared their enthusiasm and ambition.

The families began to discuss the possibility of opening a gym together, and as if by magic, their dreams turned into reality. Kaizen was born. A gym where every member is not just a student but a part of an extended family. Herica finds herself deeply connected to Kaizen, and it's not just because of the martial art; it's the sense of belonging and camaraderie that she cherishes.

Jiu Jitsu for Women

Herica's passion doesn't stop at her personal journey; it extends to her desire to empower other women. Jiu jitsu, often misconceived as a male-dominated sport, is, in fact, an art for everyone. Herica, being a mom herself, understands the need for a supportive community for women.

To cater to this need, Herica and her team at Kaizen introduced a women-only class. This class is open to women of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels. It's a place where teens and grandmas, novices and experienced practitioners, can all come together and learn. What's more, you don't need any special equipment or prior experience to participate.

The benefits of this women-only class extends beyond self-defense. It's about empowerment, self-confidence, and having time to exercise and relax. Herica firmly believes that Brazilian Jiu Jitsu can be a source of strength and empowerment in the lives of women, just as it has been in her own.
